My life is one big giant cycle of movement, From work, to the gym, to school, to spending time with family and friends I am constantly on the move. It's hard sometimes to take a step back and breathe. Stress is a normal part of life but learning how to deal and manage it is very important.
Some days are particularly stressful. Whether its work that's got you down, or something happening in your personal life, stress and anxiety can be overwhelming. It has taken me quite some time to learn how to handle my anxieties and stress. I am still nowhere near being an expert on the issue but I have found a few tricks that help me stay grounded and calm.
1. Aromatherapy.
Is there anything more comforting than the smell of mom's "Home Sweet Home" Yankee candle burning? Not for me. Certain smells have a very strong emotional pull over me. Smell is the strongest form of memory, so certain ones, especially from my past, bring me a sense of comfort. I also RAID the Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy section and am convinced I am keeping them in business. My current obsession is the Stress Relief lotion. The scent I purchase is eucalyptus tea and not only do I feel a sense of calm after putting in on, I also receive more compliments on that scent than I ever have with any perfume.
2. Put down the phone.
There have been a few times where I have forgotten my phone at home while I am out for breakfast, or it dies and I don't have a charger handy. At first I panic, What if someone needs me? What if something bad happens? But after sitting there and not being able to reach for the button to check the time, I realized how much of a freeing experience it is. Now I'm not saying go for a hike or out for the night with no phone, but every once in a while, put it down and enjoy whats happening now.
3. Appreciate yourself.
I am my hardest critic. I constantly nit-pick at things I don't like about myself physically or emotionally. Lately though, I have been trying to change my mindset of all the amazing things my body and brain are capable of. Its important to remind ourselves that we are doing
a good job and are trying to be the best we can.
